What is a donor milk bank?

A donor human milk bank collects, screens, processes and distributes donated human milk to meet the specific needs of those for who it is prescribed.  Donors are screened before milk is accepted.  The bank then pools and pasteurizes the milk, freezes and stores it.  Upon prescription, the bank distributes the milk primarily to premature or ill babies.

Donor milk banks also serve the community by increasing awareness of breastfeeding and human milk banking.  They educate hospitals on human milk as the standard of care, which contributes significantly to the health of families in their area.

The Winnebago County Health Department is able to accept donor milk after the mother has been approved for donation.  For more information, please visit the Mothers' Milk Bank of the Western Great Lakes website.
